THE CHINESE FERMENT.

FENG'S ANTI-BRITISH

OUTBURST.

*FIGHT TO THE DEATH,” (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

PEKING, JUNE 30.

The police have stopped a procession which was prepared to march through the city to-day, and as far as active mani. festations STO concerned the situation here has improved. The Press agitation, however, continues to be virulent and obnoxious placards still die gure public places.

Feng Yu-heiang chose yesterday to circulate a telegram so bellicose in character that rumour is once more busy of impending military strife. He said :-- "I swear to exhaust all my force to dig an outlet for the indignant sentiment of the people" and I would fight to the death rather than live to be controlled and illtreated. Wherefore would I like to wage a war of revenge. Irrespective of success or failure I will not desist from the fight till every one of our men perishes."

These terrible words are interpreted in the vernacular oracles as meaning that the "Christian" General is taking the side of the outraged people, and they compare his action with that of the Mukden War Lord, "who, by repressing publio ebullitione at this time of agita tion, ranges himself with the foreign oppressors."

Meanwhile. Chang Tso-lin's plan for the military occupation of Peking remains incomplete, whether because he does not like the lock of his evangelical rival or because he is delaying his effort until he is round the political Tattenhamn Corner as represented by the fortheorning en- deavour to settle the Shanghai caso by diplomacy is not yet apparent. Jockey- ing for a good place in public opinion is probably all there is in it,

But the case of the Canton Govern- ment in demanding the evacuation and the surrender of Shameen is bluff with a Serce meaning behind it. The extremists of the Kuomintang Party, urged to frenzy by their Moscow abettors, are determined to keep popular excitement alive by spectacular gestures, mischief ruay be expected from them wherever it can be compassed.

THE STRIKE AT HONG- KONG.

SUCCESSFUL MEASURES. (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)

HONG-KONG, JUNE 30. The position here is unchanged; few more workers have gone out on strike and a few have returned to their employment. Some of those applying for work have been rejected, forfeiting many years' pension and seniority. Their rejection is an expression of the determi- nation of the foreign communities to discourage striking as a political weapon. The steamer Empress of Canada came here with some White Russians on board to man the Empress of Asia. The two vessels met outside the harbour, where the transfer was effected. The Empress of Asia's crew also includes university Shipping students and professional met. Arrivals and "elearances have fallen off considerably. Coolies are escorted daily by police to their work of handling cargo, but in the meantime the warehouses are becoming congested.

The restrictions have been removed from the Chinese banks, which are paying withdrawals in full. They are no longer runk." The subjected to embarrassing successful working of the tramways and ferries by volunteers and British seamen is having a sobering effect on the Chinese.

SOVIET INCITEMENT OF STRIKES.

DISCLOSURES AT SHANGHAI TRIAL.

(FROM OUR COHRESPONDENT,)

SHANGHAI, JUNE 30. The Bolshevist agent Dosser, who, with his wife, had been deported from Hong- kong and brought before the Mixed Court here yesterday, was again before the Court to-day. The wife was discharged yester- day,

The police produced the following im- 'portant document found among his effects. It is headed "Certificate Number Forty- three," and reads:-

"The bearer of this, Comrade Dosser (Communist Party Ticket No. 493), is sent by the Agitation Department of the South Section of China to Hong-kong and Canton for organization of strike com mittees, All members of the Russian Communist Party are to give him every assistance in his work. This is certified by the seal of the Agitation Department, June 16, 1925, Shanghai.

"Agitation Department, R.C.PY"

The value of Dosser to the Russian Communists can be estimated from the fact that though bis bail had been fixed at the enormous sum of 20,000 taels lover £3,000), his counsel produced the money. In view, however, of the gravity of the case, the bail was cancelled.

The strictest precautions were taken here to aver trouble during the demon- stration to-day in commemoration of May 30. The day was uneventful except for the usual stone-throwing. The students for "the hekl a memorial service- martyrs outside the native city and the usual intemperate speeches were made, but the weather was so hot and the Fengtion [Chang Tso-lin's] troops watchful that the celebration failure.
